Tobias and the others have been under even more constant stress, because while they thought the addition of more 'official' force would have helped, it only made things a lot more complicated. Most of the others lost their homes and in some cases, their families - Tobias gained his mother. He thought this would make him feel better, but it hasn't. Not really. It's not made him feel any more human. He's basically had to admit to himself that he's not as much of a human anymore as he thought he was. He's been forced into fight or flight as things got more and more serious, and flight isn't an option. He's helped make tough decisions, he's seen way too many people die… the whole group has been under constant stress but Tobias is one of the ones that's had to speak more from a place of logical fighting rather than emotions. That's usually been his role, but the team has kind of fractured. The relationships they had before just aren't the same. He's seen way more people die than he saw before, and people die that were /on their side/. He used to be the sad, gentle kid. Even more than before he has to realize that he can't even try to go back to that. He's not a kid anymore, he's barely human anymore, he's a hawk. And the love of his life got killed and he feels like his heart ripped out. Grief is hard to process and there's no one in the world who can really understand how he feels. Right now he feels kind of like a zombie. It'll take some time for him to get over the shock, and some more time to adjust to the fact that she's not coming back, even if he goes back. He's mad, of course, but he sees the rationale behind it, and that scares him. This was war, they all knew the risks, he just… didn't think that the risks would ever come to pass. They've all been close to death before, but a death of someone on the core team, and especially the death of Rachel… he's just barely coming out of that. He's aware Rachel would want him to live, but it's difficult to imagine a new way of living without her. He's glad it's over, he really is, but it's kind of a cold comfort. He doesn't like the limelight. He doesn't like being the center of attention. He's not like the others, he can't go off and write books or whatever. But there's got to be something for him. Just not something amongst humans at home. Events even more specifics but even less formal: - he saw Ax try to blow the whole city up to get the enemy to withdraw (and they broke their ban on 'don't morph sentient beings without their permission' /again/) and the harshness of the whole thing hit him again because he didn't exactly disagree with the decision - they revealed themselves to people for the first time and fought with them which Tobias was pretty nervous about for the sake of the Hork-Bajir but it ended up okay - everyone else on the team lost their home (those that had homes) and he realized that he was upset but not as much as he probably should be - he found his mom but it was not the Disney ending he'd hoped for it actually really really sucks since she doesn't remember him and there was no magical amnesia cure like he was really hoping there was - they added a bunch of kids that 'no one else wanted' to the team which he wasn't exactly happy about because seriously guys? and then they lost the cube which Tobias was sort of mad about but he saw Cassie's logic and wasn't sure if he liked that he saw it or not - he realized Ax had spoken to the Andalite high command and decided not to tell people because he had trust in Ax but still kind of was suspicious and… still tried to help mediate. and realized once again he didn't belong anywhere - they got the military involved - and then they had the whole showdown with the Blade Ship - Tobias shut down for a while, gave into the hawk, and realized it wasn't such a bad thing to live mostly that way for a while - Two days later Rachel's memorial was carried out and Tobias took her away, intending to pretty much leave society alone for a while until he figured things out And that's where we stand right now. |
