WAKANA part 1

"Place of birth"

Wakana was born in Chofu and lived there until 5 or 6 years old and moved to Fukuoka at the last year of nursery school. She had a lot of fond memories during nursery school and still kept in contact with her friends from that time.

W: I started kindergarten after moving to Fukuoka. We were like a big family in nursery school, but the friendships in kindergarten wasn't as close. It's a place I'm not familiar with at all, also, I speak the Tokyo dialect, it's always one of things people joke about, "Wakana-chan talks like a boy (in Fukuoka dialect)" and similiar...Even though I don't have much memory about this, but the teacher says that I used to teach the other kids Tokyo dialect. (laughs) I had a happy kindergarten life, but since I'm a troublesome child, I always made the teacher angry.

"Wakana is opened minded towards everyone"

I'm feel very happy others can say that. I was talking to Keiko yesterday and she said, "It's great that Wakana is part of Kalafina!" She suddenly said that. "First impression is decided upon Wakana. It's going to be fun so it's great!" I kept hearing "You don't know what the meaning of foreign, do you?" from people. Even though this is how it is, but there are still times I get nervous. I chat with a thought of "if I'm happy, then the other person would be influenced by me", so I also have times when I can't read the atmosphere.

"Junior high school"

I have a strong personality, I don't like doing things others do. From then on, I have strange dreams such as becoming an opera singer or mangaka. I became an otaku in the last years of elementary school, during the first year of junior high, I was fascinated by Evangelion. After joining the art club, all of my conversations were of anime and manga, you can say that it's my "otaku period." Being very hard work, I became the club president during the third year.

"Dream = opera singer"

In grade three, I was in the children's choir. My mother is a music teacher, so I get a lot of chance to get in touch with music and the like of singing started when I was young.

「10代」{i don't know what this is...}

I began to take voice coaching from my mother's friend from the second year of junior high. Then, I joined the Shiki Theatre Company, not only I have to sing, but acting was also necessary, which to me, is the most difficult part. Now that I think back, everyone that's active in Shiki Theatre also practiced ballet. I had experience with chorus singing and rhythmic gymnastics, but none of ballet. After entering junior high, I quit rhythmic gymnastics and focused on singing.

"High school student"

First year of high school, how should I put it...I feel that I don't know what I want to do anymore. Because I slowly came to see the reality. Even though I want to sing, but I can't put down my studies, thinking that going into college is probably better. It wasn't too bad during the first year, but I was really feeling upset in the second year. I can't do it anymore! What should I do?! (laughs) I was thinking of what I should do to increase my spirit, so I've decided, "I want to learn to sing in a singing school!" My mother said, "Sure, here's the phone book" and gave me the phone book. (laughs)

──Sound like it came out of a commercial

W: Yes, if one day I meet Yoshizumi Ishihara-san, I'd have to thank him. I saw "Trained MISIA" when opening the phone book. MISIA-san was my favorite in junior high, I want to grow up to be like her. And she was from Fukuoka too! This is it! That school's female president is a strange person who suddenly went on the table and said, "When it's R&B~ (body moving) It should be like this~" (laughs) There, I met gospel music. The president said, "You~ Please go sing gospel music." (laughs)

After half a year, I've met a teacher I respect. That teacher taught us that a "song, is a person's feeling." "The happy feeling that singing from the heart gives cannot be calculated." Even now, I still remember all the things I've learned. I quit my studies in my second year of high school. It became a big problem in the norm. My mother cried and my father couldn't say anything from the anger. But I was very determined and said "I don't want to go to school anymore. I really want to quit." On one hand, I worked part time, on the other I had to go to school, to top that off, I was taking lessons, so life was very difficult. All the earnings I get from work went into my lessons. Because of this busy life, I was going further away from my classmates. Even though I'm still in contact with friends from high school, but back then, I no reluctance in leaving. After that, I got arranged into correspondence education and continued taking lessons. Working part time and taking gospel music lessons, then the days of participating in auditions started. I applied 10 times every month.

──Where do you apply to?

Sony Music Audition. (laughs) I failed twice. Now my dream has come true to become under Sony Music, confirming that if only you'd believe in yourself along with self confidence, dreams can come true, I'm really thankful. My goal was to become an R&B singer. I used to sing MISIA-san's songs for audition, but one day, my teacher said, "I know it's cool, but you can't just sing MISIA." I replied, "But, I want to become like MISIA" Teacher, "But the world doesn't need two MISIAs." Then I woke up. Since then, I've had other artistes songs on my audition CDs. After failing a few times, I seriously try to consider what kind of songs the judges would like to listen to or if the intro is too long and they lost interest in listening at all, things like that.

That was my 19-year-old summer. Going to Tokyo was the February of turning 20. I thought I had great power back then, full of confidence. Then I experienced all kind of things and signed onto Spacecraft Produce.
