I choose to be open about being "mentally ill" for the same reason that I choose to be open about being trans and lesbian. I believe that being in the closet is something that hurts us. I think that Mad Pride is something that is where Gay Pride was in the 1970s. I don't accept that mental illness is real in the sense that the biomedical model does, but I believe that the extreme mental states that I go through are something that deserve a label of some sort, and the label that society has decided is "socially acceptable" to call it is "mental illness", so I am willing to be somewhat accepting of that label for the reason of ease of communication.
