TAIPEI—Taiwan President Lai Ching-te plans to visit Hawaii and the U.S. territory of Guam during an forthcoming Pacific tour, a trip that has already drawn condemnation from Beijing and could spur China to stage military drills in response.

On Saturday, Lai is expected to kick off a seven-day trip that will include stopovers in Hawaii and Guam while en route to the Marshall Islands, Palau and Tuvalu, according to Taiwan’s presidential office. Lai’s Pacific trip will mark his first official overseas visit as president since assuming office in May.The announcement of President Lai Ching-te’s planned trip last week sparked angry reactions from Beijing.
