1868 - April

“What are you looking at, Kondou-san?”

Not for the first time since they arrived, Yasusada wishes they’d chosen a better hiding spot. From his position, he can hear Kondou and Hijikata’s conversation perfectly well, but there’s no way to get a good look at them without revealing themselves, to the humans and this era’s Kanesada, Horikawa, and Nagasone. Hachisuka and Nagasone are positioned a little more strategically in their own spots, but that just gives Yasusada a clear view of the pain on Nagasone’s face as he watches the humans talk, and that isn’t exactly a sight he’s eager to focus on.

"Director Sam Taylor Johnson actually wanted to change the reason Christian and Anna break up in Fifty Shades is that he ignores their safe word. Which, as bad as that sounds, actually makes sense. In the book, Anna just can't handle the lifestyle. With that change, it cements what's been implied to be the actual problem with their relationship: Christian wants to control her but doesn't know how to control himself. This would also make their final conversation more powerful. Christian tries to stop her and she firmly says **no**, *making* him listen. It would create a theme that the books try and fail to make: this is about *boundaries*"

Racism - headscarves were also a symbol of anti-colonialism. French soldiers, when invading Algeria the previous century, saw the headscarves and hijabs as a "foreign" wall, keeping them from their "prize". In the modern day, headscarves and kippahs are seen as threats to France's "perfect" "assimilated" society. France wants to celebrate their national identity and culture by removing any differences in their culture.

Sexism - much of the justification for the religious symbol ban is that it protects children who are "pressured" by their cultures to dress a certain way. Yet, by that same measure, the headscarf ban is about the French government controlling women's bodies.
