HOKAY chapter 36 while I've got a bit of weekend left!

it starts off with baren arriving at the village and thinking "so this is iga village... it's in a valley, just like okuni said." He notices that you can't see it from above because it's covered by the trees, and thinks it's a good hidden village

momochi says "this way" and baren asks if it's really alright for him to show all his cards right off the bat, and asks if he hasn't got a fake fortress or something, momochi says "you can't hide things from family, right?"

baren's like tch, that joke seriously isn't funny and then some kids are like IT'S UNCLE TANBA WELCOME BACK YAAAAY and baren's disgusted in the background while he greets them like "wtf did they miss him, gross"

then the kids attack momochi, get their butts kicked, and then get mad like WE LOST AGAAAAAAIN and momochi tells them that their maneuver was good and to keep working on that, they're like OKAY NEXT TIME WE'LL DEFINITELY KILL YOU, YOU CAN'T DIE UNTIL THEN OKAY and he says "okay I'll be waiting"

baren's just '...' and when they leave he says "iga kids are terrifying" lmao

momochi says that it's because they want to become fighters when they grow up, and he promised that if they kill him then he'll hand over the title of being head of the momochi house

baren's like "is this village just full of enemies?" and momochi says that ninjas are raised there and it's full of excitement, and he says "it's full of good things" using the same word baren used (だらけ is kind of a negative way to say "full of", "covered in", etc)

baren thinks about how nothing's changed at all, momochi asks if something's interested him and baren says it's just more peaceful than he thought it would be

momochi points out that it's the same with any village, that only people with names are off fighting (like well-known / rich or famous clan names) and that the ones who get dragged into things are always the peasants and the women and children

he says that iga has plenty of fortresses on the outside, so the damage hasn't reached them here

they arrive at momochi's place and he says "this is one of my mansions, feel free to think of it as your home and relax" and baren's like THERE'S NO WAY I CAN DO THAT

goemon (I think that was his name) pokes his head out and welcomes momochi back, says that the council meeting (or whatever they are) just started and starts to say something about hanzo-san, but then he notices momochi's got a guest

baren says hi and goemon's like ??? YOU'RE??? ONE OF THE TWINS?????

momochi says he picked him up to add to their forces and goemons like eh? eh???? and then momochi says something that could either be interpreted as "he's an orphan from *that*" or "it's (/he's, the word isn't actually there bc japanese) a memento from *that*", either way the emphasis is on the "that"... and he says to look after him

goemon's like "*that*... you mean..." and momochi's like SO YEAH I GOTTA GO TO THIS COUNCIL MEETING NOW and then he says "goemon, *this time* don't let (him) get away" and goemon's like !!!!! so I'm guessing this is implying that he knows goemon helped okuni escape...

he tells baren BEHAVE YOURSELF and disappears and baren's like OI WTF EXPLAIN MORE???

goemon says "uh... kumou baren?" and baren's like "huh? oh, yeah. am I that famous" and goemon says "your mother was the woman with the black hair named 'asahi', right?" and with the look on baren's face he says "as I thought, you--" but baren grabs him says "YOU KNOW MY MOTHER?! HOW DID SHE DIE TELL ME EVERYTHING YOU KNOW IMMEDIATELY" and goemon's like omg chill for a second

he says he doesn't know about that, just that he looked after her in the past... baren says "my mother was in iga?!" and goemon says "just for a little while, at the time I was just a low-ranking ninja but she was kind even to me" but that he doesn't know about anything after they lost touch

he says he heard about her death a few years ago, and "to think she gave birth to you twins..."

baren's like AND??? and goemon's like /vague shrugging motions OH TANBA-SAN WOULD KNOW MORE and baren's like UGHHHH

goemon says "well I mean you two are his kids--" and baren pokes him in the eyes and THAT LIE'S SPREAD ALL THE WAY TO IGA HUH HOW GROSS

goemon says "I don't know what tanba-san said, but it's the truth that he loved asahi-san", baren punches the wall and says that he'll definitely never believe that that guy is his father

he starts to walk off and goemon's like "WAIT WHERE ARE YOU GOING THAT'S--" and baren says DON'T FOLLOW ME and then gets smacked in the face by a board, good job baren... goemon's like "a ninja's mansion is full of traps after all..." then he says he'll go make some tea for him, but when he pokes his head back to ask if baren doesn't mind that it'll be tea from medicinal plants, baren's already gone

baren's storming off to go and look for any weaknesses, he stumbles over another trap that leads down to somewhere creepy?? he figures it's a hidden passage meant for escaping... he wonders if it's near the bottom of the valley and notices that there's no sunlight at all... and then something else I can't read but it's probably rude

he loses his footing and slips down into something with a skull in it, but as soon as he's like "bones??" he gets grabbed by... I'm guessing spirits or demons of some kind... they're saying "it's a person" and then "it's an outsider, not an iga" and they're telling him to stay behind while he's trying to escape, luckily baren gets saved by a ninja!!

ninja-san says "what are you doing?? normal people aren't allowed in a place like this", baren's just like "oh did you save me?" lmfao and ninja-san is like"hey you're tanba-jii's uest right, goemon was looking for you hurry up and go back"

baren's just like THAAANKS FOR THE HELP wow I never thought there'd be a place like this here and ninja-san says it's an underground cavern at the lowest part of the valley, and that it's the territory of the poor, the injured, the frail and elderly, the crazy people etc etc, basically it's the den of the "subspecies" wow that's nice bro... anyway he says that p much only tanba-jii goes down there since nobody else will get near them

baren's like "that guy does?" and ninja-san says that apparently he comes to hand out food and clothes and then I think he says that he won't forsake anybody in the village, since he then says "that person loves iga, right along with you"

then somebody's calling his name (shishimaru?) and he tells baren to gtfo... because (???? somebody's name I can't read) resents him... baren asks "you don't resent me? I hink the one who did that to your face aren't I" and shishimaru just says that it was his fault from being careless and it won't happen again

baren grins and says "I don't hate that way of thinking" and leaves just as the other ninja shows up and starts scolding shishimaru, but he says... what's her name, rin?? he tells her to be quiet or she'll attract those people (the ones down below)

she says "if we hadn't been picked up by tanba-san we'd still be down there too", shishimaru just "..." aaaand that's the end
