chapter 39 starts with sakichi and gen spying via a ladybug... he's with nobunaga and it seems like a small force of elites? and he says that as long as the battle conditions don't change then him and nobunaga won't have to do anything. Gen tells him to just keep an eye on the situation AND DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID SAKICHIIIIII and she speculates that they're up high, probably somewhere nobunaga can see all of iga at once

then she wonders if okuni's managed to sneak in alright and goes to take a look at nobukatsu's army! And I thiiiink it's a flashback to gen giving okuni some kind of token and telling her to give it to baren, so that she'll be able to get through to him even with the magical barriers in place... and I think she gives okuni one for them too

sakichi mentions that he won't be able to move around since he was ordered to stay at nobunaga's side, okuni says she'll go and he's like ALONE??? and she says she she's worried about him being by himself, he tries to argue and she says "IT'S FINE you just focus on getting the scroll. ...Trust me, brother"

and then I'm not exactly sure but I think it's implying that she's also doing it to keep him off the battlefield... since it says "baren and I will go to the battlefield with/at the demon king's will" so I suspect it's like THIS IS GONNA BE FUCKED UP WE GOTTA KEEP SAKICHI PURE

suddenly toubee is like "okuni?" and when okuni jumps she's like "I knew it... what are you doing here, aren't you always with those guys" and okuni's like SHHHHH I'M UNDERCOVER

toubee says "don't tell me you plan on going into battle" and okuni says "yes I do plan so don't get in my way"

then some guy shows up holding what I assume is a weapon but looks like a garbage can lid... apparently his name is yuuma? he's like "oh it's one of you demon twins... what are you scheming this time"

okuni's thinking UGH ANNOYING PEOPLE HAVE SHOWN UP and I think he basically tells her to stay away... toubee says it was a misunderstanding (I'm assuming she's talking about the whole village thing from a few chapters ago) and yuuma's like no, we don't know when we're gonna get in trouble and suffer again... and then I think he says he understands that they've been preparing for risks even beyond what kunitomo's already done (or said or w/e) but to at least let him worry

okuni's watching all this and says THIS IS OVERKILL lmao and then I think yuuma says that he's done regretting things he hasn't said?? or sth like that... and as they're going back and forth okuni's like I CAN'T TELL WHICH ONE IS OLDER lmfjk

she chats with toubee and toubee mentions that yuuma basically acts like an overprotective big bro to her, and then I think she's talking about herself when she mentions she's gonna have to settle down and get married soon... and she says "so what about you and sakichi" and okuni's like HA???? IT'S NOT LIKE THAT

toubee's like "yeah yeah" and okuni says "no really, it's not like that... no one is stupid enough to be serious about someone they might have to kill"

toubee's obvs like ?? and okuni changes the subject to ask what toubee & co are doing there, I'm not gonna go into detail but she says they're in charge of transporting stuff to the frontlines, like getting explosives and food and shit to the fighters up front

she says that the supply they're dealing with rn is what they're in charge of, and okuni's like fck this is a lot PLEASE BE CAREFUL BAREN and it shows baren and the ninjas heading out

then it has shots of all of them and says they're keeping their thoughts in each of their hearts, and the next bit is a v dramatic 2 page spread of nobunaga and tanba both saying THE VICTOR WILL BE ME

the battle starts, nobunaga asks sakichi to tell him his thoughts about the battle

sakichi says that iga's fighting a fortress battle, and that getting close is going to be tough, esp because their opponents are shinobi so it's hard to tell what kind of traps they might've set... such as pitfalls for the horses that can't be seen until you're basically on top of them, which seems to be what's happening lmao and he says they probably won't be able to get close with horses, like they thought

then the army is gonna get disorderly and chaotic while they're trying to avoid more traps, and that's when they'll get hit with arrows

nobunaga says "hm, so we aren't gonna win easily after all" and sakichi points out that iga's dealt with lots of armies so they're used to this, whereas nobukatsu probably isn't... nobunaga says "so I should take command?" and when sakichi goes !!! he says LOL JK it'd be pretty convenient for some people if I was distracted by the battle huh... well don't worry I've got a plan

cut to okuni who's thinking about how she can't get close bc of the arrows and the fire, then SURPRISE IT'S OUBEE & CO

okuni's like ??? WHAT ABOUT THE SUPPLIES but apparently it's nobunaga's orders... okuni's like "we're too far away for you to shoot it's not gonna hit" but then they bust out some giant guns and she's like WTF I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE??? and their shots do hit

the ninjas try to fight back with boiling water and catapults and stones and shit but they get shot... okuni's like wtfffff we're this far away and it's that accurate jfc kunitomo's no ordinary blacksmith (or blacksmith group, w/e)

the army gets through the gates and some guy's yelling orders etc and then turns around and sees everybody dead behind him... somebody flips over him and he says "kouga...?" and as he strikes and lands kunitomo says "it's kunitomo"

okuni thinks "they took down one fortress so easily..." and then gets in contact with gen to tell her it's gonna be tough to fuck up this group, gen tells her there's a momochi fortress to the north and baren's master is probably in there

toubee's like OKUNI idk what you're trying to do but there's a ton of fortresses around that are bigger than this, don't go wandering aimlessly

okuni says "aww are you worried about me" and toubee says "yes"

okuni's like :| and then tells her not to worry, and says she still has *this* that she gave her (the gun), and thanks her

toubee's like WELL THAT'S UNEXPECTEDLY HONEST lmao and okuni's like "okay just deal with that" aka the group in the background losing their minds screaming KASHIRAAAAAA (/head / leader I'm assuming??? they keep saying it lmfkjhg I wasn't sure who it referred to)

toubee sends her off with some supplies saying it's a gift from the Supply Squad, okuni says "I just keep owing you favors" and toubee's like nah, same here

she says "next time, if you make an enemy of kunitomo we won't hold back" and okuni says she'll remember that

as she's going she thinks that if things keep on this way all the small fortresses are gonna fall asap, she sees smoke in the distance and says "that direction is..."

and it cuts back to nobunaga who says "momochi fortress?" and he asks sakichi "are you worried?", to which sakichi obvs has to reply "ABOUT... WHAT..." while his heart's pounding and he's thinking about how nobunaga shouldn't have any idea that he's acquainted with tanba or that baren's over there (which probably means he does know, because this is anime and that's how it works smdh)

nobunaga says that in this battle, the ones they'll have to worry about are momochi and fujibayashi, and that ordinary methods won't work with them

and it ends with a bunch of shots of baren & co looking Cool
