ch 40 starts off with tanba overlooking the battle, somebody comes to report that the yoshioka fortress in the south has fallen and that nobukatsu's forces are gonna be there soon

tanba thinks "that's too fast..." and that yoshioka was apparently a giant faker and sucked at battle after all

the messenger starts to say they should head down but tanba's like no, it's my son's first battle, let's watch over him

meanwhile the army's yelling orders like EVEN THOUGH IT'S MOMOCHI THEY'RE A SMALL FORCE, OUR GIANT ARMY WILL DESTROY THEM LET'S ATTACK FROM THREE DIRECTIONS YAAAAA and then they turn around get strung up and slaughtered by ako, good job guys

ako's like damn they really did split up just like that guy said, and flashes back to baren saying "they're gonna split up and attack from three directions" lmao

he tells them to wait along each path and to make sure they don't have any time to think... and basically to use enough destructive power to shock them and destroy their morale

lots of scenes of the ninjas fighting in different along all the different paths, ouka and goemon are casually tossing boulders, rintarou and shishimaru are fucking them up, etc etc

baren strolls out to deal with his group and he's like hm, more than I thought... as expected of oda's army

one guy's like WTF ONE PERSON ARE YOU MAKING FUN OF US and the guy beside him is like WAIT IT MIGHT BE A TRAP and then baren and kaishin kill them all... the army freaks out and kaishin and baren are like "they're running away" "yep" lmao

and then the text, which I'm assuming is baren's thoughts, says "That's right, flee. From here, it's a straight path. Flee, just run, don't look around just keep looking straight ahead"

and then he says "caught you" and the trap goes off and kills 'em

the text says "the, the frontline troops have been annihilated... by just a few opponents..."

then I'm assuming it's baren again thinking "I don't pity them" (I think that's what he's saying, even though with that expression he looks like he wants to throw up) "When you go to battle, you're putting your life on the line to kill or be killed. this is battle"

kaishin says "thanks to your magnificent skill, we finished using minimal warpower"

then he asks "so how was it? your first battle. There aren't many occasions where you get a large army as your opponents." and then I can't quite tell who's speaking, I think it's still kaishin though... he says "Excitement, fear, elation, it's a feeling good enough to make you tremble. It's a place where lives are flying around past each other... it's not strange to be engulfed by it"

then it's text but I'm assuming it's baren, it says "A lukewarm wind, the smell of blood and gunpowder smoke... my soul is trembling, it's not just watching, right now I'm living in battle"

and then out loud he says "it's not bad" and that's it
