I CAN'T REMEMBER IF I TRANSLATED THE LAST CHAPTER FOR YOU???? LMFKJHG IF I DIDN'T IT'S TOO LATE NOW but all I remember is that it ended with tanba telling the group to abandon the fort and baren's face being Not Okay with it

and that's where 44 picks up from apparently!! somebody's telling tanba that it's getting hella nasty out there and he says "we're throwing away the fort, go tell everyone"

baren says ARE YOU FUCKIN SERIOUS and tanba says that he'd intended to shave off some of their strength here but the situation has changed

THEN IT'S A LITTLE WEIRD because he's thinking, and the phrase he uses means "to have a keen nose" both with literal scents and like "a good nose for bargains" but the kanji he uses is wrong for the phrase LMFAO the one he uses means "to be effective" and it's often used with medicine... ANYWAY ENOUGH RAMBLING he thinks "with this fog, my nose is no longer effective" (or w/e) "no one would be able to smell gunpowder" and he says "I miscalculated"

he tells them to retreat to hijiyama castle and that they'll rally there... the ninjas are like "roger... if we can get the fuck out of here" lmfao

Baren thinks "we're surrounded? what should we do" and notices that they've got a clear view of the area but they're basically defenseless, since if they turn their backs they'll be shot and if they use a secret escape path they'll immediately be followed

shishimaru says its about 10,000 vs 400 and that the enemy's still got too much strength, baren thinks "how many people can survive this...?"

tanba says "ako, how much?" and she says "with 10... no, 5 people..." and then it could be "4 and a half hours" or "half past 4" or "15 minutes" LMFAO I'm not quite sure which BUT THE GENERAL IDEA IS "not that long"

tanba tells her to take them and go, she heads out with saizou, kazemaru, rinka, hino, and yaza

baren says "oi what--" and tanba cuts him off and says "I'm leaving iga to you"

then there's fighting, it looks like the ninjas are staging the cover for their escape basically... the enemies yell stuff like WE WON'T LET YOU RUN and AIM FOR THAT ONE and stuff, ako laughs like a maniac and tells them she'll pull the strings so just relax and die lmfao

somebody says DON'T FALTER WE'LL CRUSH THEM WITH NUMBERS and then hekitai zennosuke (who is apparently also known as heki daizen according to the internet) shows up an asks them to be his opponent, somebody yells that they're closing the gates

tanba orders kaishin and goemon to go ahead to hijiyama and convene with momota to figure out a battle plan

baren asks "is she just a pawn for you to sacrifice?" and tanba says "what else is there?" (he could also be talking about all of them, I can't quite tell)

baren says "she's a nasty piece of work but she idolizes you with all her heart" and tanba says "yes, it was convenient. I'm glad she served a good purpose in the end" and baren's like DON'T TALK IN THE PAST TENSE

tanba says "what are you getting mad about? what can't you forgive? the priority should be iga, not an individual"

baren says "some things can be protected because you've got sacrifices, I won't object to that. but a whole is the sum of its parts"

then he says " 'think of the individual and love the whole. become a person who loves and is loved.' that's my mother's teachings"

he says "what you're looking at is iga, not its people. I'm not gonna keep up a country made by somebody like that"

cut to ako saying I WON'T LET YOU TAKE ONE STEP IN HERE, somebody rides up like AW MAN THAT'S OUR TAIZEN LOOKS LIKE IT WAS AN EASY VICTORY HUH

taizen says yes and that there's only one more district (or well, one more area of the fort, w/e) ahead, the other guy says that since they're confined to their secret escape route they'll be able to chase after them in no time

ako says YOU THINK I'LL LET YOU GO??? and horse dude's like man you're tenacious, even if you give up no we won't overlook this (I think?? idk it's basically gtfo out of the way ur deda)

taizen's like yo da fuck are you doing, you're being abandoned?? even though you're trying to save them??? and ako's like YEAH NO SHIT and I think she says that tanba only gives orders to people he knows are capable?? so basically sending her out there is his way of acknowledging her as far as she's concerned

(side note I'M ASSUMING AKO IS A GIRL BUT SHE?? USES BOKU SO THROWS HANDS UP IN THE AIR )

anyway taizen is like 'seems like you were told to go and die tho' and ako's like YES THAT'S ALL I'VE EVER WANTED, taizen's like 'hm I thought ninjas were good at killing off their feelings but I guess I was wrong' and ako says that's always been her personality and that every day she's overflowing with jealousy

she says she knows that's not ninja-like and that she was dumped in the countryside (village??) bc she couldn't control her emotions well but predictably tanba rescued her

(the boxes say 'inferiority, jealousy, hatred, it felt like I was going to be crushed by negative emotions I couldn't shake off. But... but... but...! I was saved!!" and tanba says "you, you've got promise")

then she yells about how nobody else ~understands~ including baren and sakichi and that the only worthy ruler of their country is tanba-san EVERYBODY DIEEEE etc

taizen's like 'ninjas sound sad as fuck' and ako's like NO I'M DELIGHTED RIGHT NOW

he asks for her name and she's like MORON YOU THINK NINJAS HAVE NAMES?? and he says "I see. That's too bad... well, at the very least, I'll send you off without suffering" and she (presumably?????) dies thinking "tanba-san, I wonder if I did well"

they burst in like GOTCHAAAAA-- wait wtf it's a dead end WHERE THE FUCK DID THEY GO and it looks like their escape route was just fuckin jumping off cliffs I CAN'T EVEN TELL smdh.... but the enemies are like damn we got got... they notice that it leads down to a forest and figure that the ninjas split up and escaped and they're like DAMN WE GOT GOT lmfao

taizen says "What tremendous tenacity. I commend you, commander with no name" while the other soldiers are like WELL THE ENEMY RAN AWAY BUT WHATEVER MOMOCHI FORT HAS FALLEN WE WIN YAY

cut to sakon who's with tsutsui junkei, he's watching momochi fortress and notes that the main force has fallen and sakon's like "woah, that momochi..."

tsutsui says they've gotta move too and sakon asks where, tsutsui says they've gotta head to hijiyama castle bc that's where the ninjas are headed... and then I think he tells sakon to gather the surviving champions so they can go take care of the last tough spot?? idk for sure but it's prob something along those lines

some guys walk up with "prisoners", tsutsui's like 'what that's it?' and one of the soldiers is like yeah if you look away for two seconds they kill themselves so...

sakon's like uh yo they're just kids?? and tsutsui says that if they're on the battlefield it doesn't matter if they're adults or children and he's like 'that's rude to the ninjas kiyooki' lmf

sakon goes to release them and then I'm guessing he stops the kid from breaking his suicide pill or whatever, and he tells them not to worry

the kid's like IDK ANYTHING ABOUT IGA VILLAGE THERE'S NOTHING I CAN TELL YOU, sakon's like ??? and tsutsui asks the soldiers if they know what he's talking about, one says that nobunaga plans to exterminate them all

sakon says "women and children have nothing to do with this" and then says 'sorry for scaring you miss' to the kid and tells her that it's dangerous and to go back to the village and help everybody who can't fight run away

the girl's like ".........." AND THEN HER HEAD FLIES OFF AND SOMEONE STARTS SCREAMING "NAIVE NAIVE NAIVE NAIVE" and that's the end
