From an early age I have been intrigued by Science and Maths, and more recently I have found Chemistry to be of most interest to me, particularly organic chemistry and how molecules can be manipulated in industry to form compounds more in demand in society. I also particularly enjoy problem solving, which is one of my strengths in my A-Level Maths and AS-Level Further Maths courses. Chemical Engineering appeals to me as a career as it is a way for me to combine Chemistry and Maths in a practical way, and to see how the mechanisms and reactions studied at A-level are used in industry. Furthermore, from my research I have seen that Chemical Engineers are much in demand around the world; a qualification in Chemical Engineering would give me good career prospects in a challenging and continually changing field.
The MEng Chemical Engineering course is of most interest to me as it will give me more experience within the field and take me closer to attaining CEng status, which I feel is an achievable goal with my dedication and hard work. The optional placement year is especially appealing to me as it will help me to further my knowledge of the subject and give me the chance to use the skills I will learn in the University in a full-scale environment. I look forward to the challenging nature of the course as I take great satisfaction in getting to grips with difficult topics and finding the correct solution to a problem, no matter how long it may take me.
The skills that I already have will definitely allow me to make the most of the Chemical Engineering course.I am very motivated to complete any projects set to a high standard and my excellent time-keeping skills ensure the work is completed on time. Furthermore, I am comfortable working on projects both individually and as part of a team, and I am confident when presenting ideas and speaking in front of others. These skills were put to use as I was part of a team at College in charge of creating a promotional video for the Sciences, with little tutor input, which was completed on time and to a high standard.
Through my college I have had the opportunity to visit Liverpool University to perform Chemistry experiments in the University labs, my favourite being the 'Nanotechnology' trip. I was also one of only three students chosen from the year to take part in the Young Analyst of the Year competition in Liverpool, in which our team placed 2nd. I really enjoyed working in a team with other equally motivated students to complete the tasks in hand and to perform analytical tests, such as infra-red spectroscopy, that we cannot experience within college. Through these trips I have gained invaluable experience of working in University labs and the protocol involved.
One of my hobbies is Drama and I am proud to be part of the in-house theatre group at my college. I really enjoy taking part as it helps to improve my confidence in front of others, allows me to work as part of a talented team to put together pieces of theatre and I find performing in front of others a thrilling experience. I have also always loved Art; I used this to help others last year by taking part in some volunteer art projects, including creating a new sign for the Warrington YMCA. It felt great to be giving back to the community, and I feel truly proud to see our work in place. Another hobby of mine is reading, both fiction and non-fiction titles, and I subscribe to Chemistry Review and New Scientist to further my understanding of Chemistry and read about fascinating new research. My love of reading lead me to take a part-time job at Waterstone's in Warrington as a Bookseller, a job that I love as I get to spend a lot of time in customer service and share my passion for books with others.
I really feel that I would be an excellent candidate for the Chemical Engineering course as I am dedicated and hard-working and always strive to achieve the best I can and further my knowledge.
