I'm an Australian in my early 50's, and it was a second tier swear word in my younger days, but by now it has drifted into pretty much everyday use to the point where it is not unusual to hear it used in advertising shown in prime time.

A case in point - this Australian tourism ad shown in the UK a few years ago, which lists the ways in which Australia is ready to receive visitors, then asks "so where the bloody hell are ya?". Caused a mild stir in England as "bloody hell" is still a little strong for prime time.
