Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch genre and landscape painter, best known for his painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring" (1665), which is the subject of the Tracy Chevalier book of the same name. Vermeer only enjoyed slight recognition while still living; today he is considered one of the best Dutch painters in history.
