Photo exercise 4
This week you are to reflect back on The King’s Speech.
So, select a work you know (use TKS if you choose to but not your piece for your final paper) and reflect on how we discussed symbol, icon and signifier. Take 10 images (tell me which work you are referring to) that, if you were doing a remake/adaptation of the work, show how you would use symbol etc to express your understanding of the piece.


As an example, in TKS, David arrives by aeroplane. In dramatic terms there is no reason why he has to, but symbolically it refers back to the toy plane that hangs over Bertie when he visits Lionel’s studio. This links the audience’s understanding of the significance of both the toy plane and how the nature and presence of David as the older brother ‘hangs over’ Bertie’s head and therefore his psychological state and relationship to David.
