Is it possible that grandmasters can think 15-20 moves ahead of the game? Any master has the ability to visualize a chess position 15 moves in the game. But that isn’t what makes them strong. Studies have shown that GMs, and average, don’t calculate much further than strong club players. They are able to calculate deeply and precisely when called for, but mainly their power is from being better able to know what is worth calculating and what is not. There is an interesting video on YouTube where GM Nakamura and IM Levy are presented with top-level chess problems and walk through their thought process. Nakamura didn’t get all of them, but in every case, the best move was one of the first he considered, within seconds of seeing the position, while Levy often never considered the best move. |
