I don't work in a screenplay format. I do a lot of outlining at the start of a project, both in longform and more concise bullet formats. I maintain a gameworld document that covers numerous aspects of the world, such as the setting and time period and characters/factions, as well as a story document that outlines the main beats of the story, and goes into depth about the backstory that sets the events into motion. I also maintain a spreadsheet of all the characters, going into depth on each one, including details on their manner of speaking, and everything about their background and their hopes and dreams and so forth. Stuff they might not even know about themselves. With a big cast, it's really important to me that each character feel distinct, and feel like they belong in the world, and bring out a new dimension of the world and other characters they interact with. I don't use anything fancy for the writing. Google Docs and such. I suppose I should be embarrassed by how much writing I do directly into a spreadsheet, but whatever -- I do it. I also write directly in SublimeText where our game data is stored. |
