"The news is bad," Impa tells her. "Most of Castle Town has not been harmed, thank the Goddesses, but Ganondorf has had himself proclaimed king. There has been no sign of His Majesty since the fighting started."

"You mean Father's dead." Zelda doesn't need the words, not really. The dreams have come every night since they fled the castle, dreams of calamity and grief. She knows this truth in her bones.

Impa has never lied to her; in this moment, she is not about to start.

"I can't be certain, child." For a moment she looks reluctant to continue, but powers on. "I saw little more of the fighting in the castle than you did. But battle is never bloodless... and there are rumors that Ganondorf confirmed his death to the people of Castle Town.

"You mean..." She swallows hard. "I killed him."

"<i>No,</i> child. <i>Ganondorf</i> did that-"

"But I got him killed. He's dead, and Link is gone and everyone in the castle- Impa, what about everyone else? Did they make it out?"

Her guardian says nothing for too long to be a coincidence, and Zelda realizes she doesn't need an answer.
