Why would anyone want to? Living within the grid is like having everything you could have ever wanted handed to you just by a thought. If you live within the Grid, the world is simple. Do what you're told, live how you're told, fulfill your role in the system, and you'll be rewarded with everything else you could want. You think and the chip inside your brain sends messages, texts, makes delivery orders, files your taxes, anything you want is a thought away. It doesn't matter whether or not you want the role you were given. Obviously you don't know what you really want. The Algorithm has studied everything about you, broken you down to your most basic components and decided that role is what you need to be the best you can be, to give your utmost to the Grid. This is who you are and what you should be doing. And as long as you do it well, your life will be happy and so will everyone else's. You have to fulfill your part in the system. Trisk always thought that fulfilling their part in the system was the only thing that mattered. When they had started their training, they excelled, when they graduated, they went straight into the workforce doing what the Algorithm had told them to do. Always trust the Algorithm. And that is what Trisk had done. So what if they had been interested in nature and biology and sciences of the world when they were little? So what if they had maybe questioned things a little too much as a child, and if maybe they'd been sent to Detention one too many times before they finally learned their lesson about how the world works best. The Algorithm said their role would be as a delivery person. It allowed them to travel all around the city and even into the Agriculture Acres outside of the city where all of the food is manufactured. It's not such a bad life, living in the role their were given. It's quiet, peaceful, and they don't have any trouble. That is until one day Trisk notices something very strange. A package their are supposed to be delivering to an address that doesn't exist. Trisk knows everywhere there is to know in the city and the surrounding Suburbs that feed into it. This address does not exist. The person ON the address doesn't exist. They even follow the route to where the address SHOULD be and find nothing there. Is this some prank one of their loosely called "friends" is pulling on them? Did someone really get an address this wrong they even wrote down a name that doesn't exist? So Trisk does something they shouldn't. They open the package. Inside is a necklace. A transparent crystal on a simple corded chain with what looks to be...a chip at the center? Touching that stone is about to reawaken something in Trisk, a piece of themselves they had lost long ago and open their eyes to the world they've been trying to shut away. It's not that no one leaves The Grid, it's that no one escapes. |
