1 2 3 4 5 | omg thank you so so much!! (if you liked/were emotionally obliterated by this one you'd probably also like The Summer's Queen which is Narnia) goodness... what works influence me? I'm hyperlexic and was reading lightyears out of my age range by the time i was like 3-4 and I have read SO many books for so many years I couldn't point to any particular works I am influenced by that inspired me for this specific fic but I can give broad strokes I guess? Grimm's/ Andersen's unedited fairy tales (especially the depressing ones), and loads of classic lit like Lewis, Burnett, Bradbury, Tolkien, the Bronte sisters, Austen... boatloads of poetry from Plath to Tennyson to Whitman to Neruda. I distinctly remember reading Ivanhoe by Walter Scott when I was like ten and being enthralled by the descriptions of the landscape and then jumping immediately into Tolkien and it was like a double whammy obsession installation of Lots Of Environment Descriptions into my brain. I've always loved a good tragic ending and I blame a combination of way too much British literature and the general events of my life up to this point for that, even though I know for amateur transformative romance works they're not exactly popular in comparison to happily ever afters. Dialogue for me is probably the most enjoyable part of writing because it's shaped by characterization, like who someone -is- will define how they speak and what they say and that in turns shapes plot. I guess I like to think of plot as being defined by dialogue. It's just "the sequence of events that happens when people make decisions around their speech". And it's really fun for me to do, honestly, mostly because I "test" it by holding my husband hostage in my living room and reading out loud in character as the characters I write to see if it sounds right like some kind of demented method actor. So I'm very glad you enjoyed it! And I'd love to hear your detailed thoughts!! |
