Drae didn't. He didn't believe in miracles or "faith" or even there being some higher meaning to life. He believed that people were people and many people were shit, but some were good. It's just that the good ones often got beaten down by the shitty ones. Life had no meaning except living it and maybe you could have good times, bond with good people who mattered to you, before someone else took it all away. Positively fatalistic, some might call him. He wouldn't disagree. The world was hell, but somehow he managed and he insisted that he would drag his best friend Laryn with him until the end. Sure, Laryn grumbled and argued and was way more down about life than he was, angry about the fate of the world and how it treated people just trying to survive, but that was why Drae was there. He was the upbeat one in their morbid duo. They could handle anything while they were together. And you know maybe he didn't know what to do with himself if he didn't follow Laryn, didn't keep him pulling him back from the brink. Because Laryn had been the one to save his life so many times when they were younger and Drae decided he would be the one to keep pulling Laryn back from the edge. Sure, the world may have got to shit when someone had the grand idea to open a hellmouth and leave it that way, but they were surviving. They needed each other and no one else. Then Laryn had gotten injured saving him from a wraith, trying to eat his soul. And Drae had to watch as he whithered and faded, his soul twisting as he hungered for souls of his own, turning into a wraith himself. And Drae wasn't going to let his best friend suffer. So he got him the souls he needed. A few assholes never getting a chance to see hell wasn't hurting anyone right? And it's not like this would be permanent, oh no. This was just a temporary thing, something to help ease Laryn's pain. Sure, maybe Laryn didn't want to give in and eat the souls, but Drae knew what was best for him. He'd always pull him back before things got to far. He'd never let Laryn lose himself completely. He just needed to figure out how to undo what the wraith had done to him and heal Laryn's soul before the time was up. He had until the blood moon to heal him and that was six months away at first. Then four months. Then three. Then four weeks. No problem. He had time. Even if that meant he had to find a necromancer and pay them to undo it. Necromancers just weren't easy to find nowadays. And if you couldn't count on anyone else, you could always count on yourself. Laryn could always count on HIM. So thus started Drae's journey to becoming a necromancer to save his best friend's withering soul, no matter what it took. Drae Hull didn't believe in Miracles. You make your own and that's what he was going to do. |
