Friend: I just realized this whole time I was picturing Walter as a black man and I finally looked at a picture of him and it's ELIJAH WOOD
Me: what? I literally explicitly told you that he was played by Elijah Wood. and that I thought it was meaningful he was a child actor and maybe someday it would get revealed that he and Misty had met each other in the past, like when Elijah Wood and Christina Ricci were in The Ice Storm
Friend: I know you told me that stuff
Me: but at the same time I'm so touched that you are invested in my Walter story and have let him into your heart and have some mental image of him
Friend: yes, it's a very specific actor. ok. here it is. it's this guy. Sucre
Me: ...huh, this guy is so much more uh. not a total nerd compared to Walter
Friend: have you seen Prison Break
Me: WAIT. WAIT. there's the map guy. this is the guy who wanted to see his girlfriend again. and then episode 2, main guy tries to fuck the nurse. that's what I know
Friend: yeah, he's the main guy's best friend, and he starts becoming reluctant to participate because he doesn't want to be reimprisoned and further separated from his girlfriend
Me: see this is so relevant to the story because like I said, Pyotr and Walter are friends (well allies that are complicated, they get angry, they're manipulative) and Pyotr is focused solely on escape and so Walter comes to him like "no, this Misty thing has to be my priority"
---
Friend: I finally realized why I made the association. the first thing you were telling me about Walter was that he's very close with his grandmother, and it made me think of like this Puerto Rican Roman Catholic culture where family bonds are considered very important
Me: see but like I did look up Elijah Wood to consider inspiration for Walter's religious background, for example if Elijah is Jewish then of course Jewish
Friend: Elijah gives me those catholic vibes to me
Me: SEE? YEAH. IDK IF IT'S THE IRISH PART OF HIS HERITAGE THAT SHOWS IN HIS FACE OR WHAT. but he did grow up Catholic. So hell yeah, Walter grew up Catholic. And I extrapolated from literally one sentence, but like, I think it could make sense if the family were emotionally repressed, like Grandma was trying so hard to be normal and then she snapped and murdered Grandpa Joe, while the parents were repressed and tried to move on, and then Walter is... trying to be good and legal but also wants to do all this other stuff
