WHAT BROUGHT YOU BACK TO THE FILM SERIES?

I loved the journey up to Dark Phoenix and specifically wantedto come back because Simon was directing.

I wanted to lend whatever I could bring to the table for him. Hewas such a fantastic collaborator and engineer of First Class, Days of FuturePast and Apocalypse and to see him get in the director’s chair, I was reallyexcited for him.

THIS IS SIMON’S DIRECTORIAL DEBUT. HOW WASHE AS A DIRECTOR?

He was very relaxed and very confident. It seemed like he’d beendoing it for years. He’s been on so many massive films and been an integralpart in so many of them.

He’s also a very smart man, he’s the kind of guy that doesn’tspeak unless he’s educated on something or has knowledge on it.

WHERE DO WE FIND ERIK IN THE NEW MOVIE?

He’s finally become the cult leader that was always alive inhim! (laughs) He’s formed Genosha, so he’s managed to create this community,independent state/nation where mutants can live in harmony and without attack.Anyone who agrees to pitch in and do their part are welcome there.

It’s self-sufficient, it’s off the grid, and it’s his strugglesthrough the series, certainly when I was playing it, culminating in thisphysical place.

Since his family has been ripped away from him, from whathappened to him as a child and then, of course, with his wife and child later,well, that sense of death is always with him.

THIS FEELS LIKE SIMON DRIVING IT TO BE MORECHARACTER-BASED. WAS THAT YOUR FEELING?

I think he wanted to strip everything down, boil it down to thebones… even visually, the way he shot it, a lot of it is handheld, and I’m notwearing any Magneto costumes.

The helmet is there but everything is pared down to be acharacter exploration.

I don’t know. I certainly was very thankful that it was an easyin and out for me, especially if you look at what Nicholas (Hoult) goes througheach day as Beast!

Compared to him, I definitely got an easier route.

THERE’S A LINE IN THE FILM ABOUT THEREALWAYS BEING A SPEECH FROM XAVIER. DID IT FEEL LIKE SIMON PLAYING WITH THETROPES OF THE GENRE?
電影裡有句臺詞是說Xavier總在發表演說。這個是不是Simon在玩梗？
Exactly. We’ve all heard the ideology, whether they’re playingchess together or Charles is talking to him telepathically. There’s this backand forth.
的確是。不管是他們兩個一起下棋的時候，還是Charles用心靈感應說話的時候，我們總聽過他的理念。就是這個理念來來回回。
It was a nice little tongue-in-cheek moment in the script, whichis kind of like the Indiana Jones moment where he just pulls the pistol andshoots a guy instead of getting into hand-to-hand combat. That was fun!

JESSICA JOINED THE CAST THIS TIME. DID YOUGET TO ACT WITH HER ALL?

It was great to have her join us. We didn’t really have a lot ofscenes together, just a few moments together in the final act of the movie.
她能加入我們真的很好。我們其實沒有很多要一起拍的場景，只在電影最後一段裡有幾分鐘在一起拍攝。
She’s present with Jean, and so it mainly was acting beats thatI had any interaction with her character.
It’s a very technical aspect to it. You’ve got to make sure thatthe timings are right and knowing that a lot of things are going to be added inlater. It’s making sure those rhythms are correct. More than anything else,it’s a very technical exercise.
她和Jean一起出現，而且我和她的角色的互動也主要是打來打去。這是很講究技術的。你要保證正確的時長，要知道之後會添加很多東西上去。你也要保證正確的表演節奏。這是一項比起其他事情，技術性都強的工作。

IS IT SOMETHING THAT YOU’RE USED TO THESEDAYS?

Absolutely. When I started doing effects movies, you had toimagine what they were going to put in later. There was some storyboardingstuff but now they’ve got pre-visualisation stuff that they show you on alaptop, to see what it’s going to look like and the geographical elements.

Of course, you know it’s going to be a lot more fantastical whenthe team has spent some time on it. I enjoy the technical challenges. It’sanother thing that needs to be learned, and it’s something that is fun toexplore.

It’s not only being in time with the actors. It’s also being intime with the stunt team, if you’re on wires it’s the riggers… everybody iscommunicating in the same rhythm. It’s like a dance and I enjoy that.

HOW IS THE FEELING ON SET?

At the beginning, you’re really trying to bond with everyone.You’re getting to know each other and those sorts of silly games, I know theycan be a little annoying if people are trying to gather order on set butthey’re also very important for the actors to get to a personal level with oneanother, to be comfortable with one another, and to have that camaraderie.
起初，你會嘗試去認識所有人。通過一些有點蠢的遊戲，演員們會逐漸熟悉起來。當然，在維護現場秩序的時候，可能會很惱人。但是我認為演員們在私人的層面上熟悉對方很重要。這樣使演員們擁有舒適感，進而建立友誼。
We trust each other. We depend on each other and we all likeeach other. So it’s just the maturation of that relationship.

ARE YOU EVER TEMPTED TO SEPARATE YOURSELF,TO GO METHOD WITH MAGNETO’S FEELING OF ISOLATION?
你有沒有試圖去隔離自己，以達到萬磁王隔離感？
It depends what my mood is on the day. There are times whereI’ll just go away and find a corner where I can just be by myself if I need tobe in more of a meditative state.
這是由我當天的狀態決定。有時候我需要進入深思的狀態，我就會離開人群，然後找一個只有我自己的角落呆著。
We’re all at ease with one another. We all know each other verywell and it’s whatever each of us needs to do.

There’s always a respect there about whatever the other person’sprocess is and if anyone is ever struggling on camera, or in a moment, we’reall there for each other 100 per cent and we want everyone to be the best onthese sets.
對於進入狀態的這個過程，我們都是互相尊重的。如果有人在鏡頭前難以找到狀態，我們會百分百地互相支持，並希望所有人都能獻出最好的表演。

WHAT IS THE OVERRIDING THEME OF THE MOVIETHIS TIME?
這部電影的主題是什麼？
I think the seed of talking about female characters and powerwas there from the beginning. Simon had unfinished business after The LastStand, and you could tell from Apocalypse that he was putting this story inplace, setting it up.
我覺得對於女性角色與力量的討論是一直存在的。在《背水一戰》之後，西蒙還有一些未完的事務需要處理。但是從《天啟》就能看得出來，他已經在梳理並設立這個故事了。
So, the germ of that was there and the timing, as it happens atthe moment just seems to be in sync with what’s going on in the real world.
所以，這些主題的萌芽是從那時埋下的，它們出現的是時間也合適，似乎和現實世界發生的事情同步了。
But Simon’s always been of that mindset, the equality across theboard for both the female and male characters.

WERE YOU GLAD NOT TO BE THE THREAT THISTIME?
這部電影裡萬磁王不是威脅，你感到慶倖嗎？
I was a little bit jealous, to be honest. “What? Somebody elseis causing trouble?” Apocalypse already stole that from me in the movie beforeso I was getting used to it!
老實講我是有點嫉妒的：“什麼？居然有別人去惹麻煩了？”上一部電影裡，天啟已經把惹麻煩的特權從我那兒偷走了 ，所以我已經習慣了。

DO YOU SEE YOU THIS AS A POTENTIAL SWANSONG FOR THE CURRENT TEAM? WOULD YOU COME BACK AGAIN IF ASKED?
你把這部電影看作現有團隊的收官之作嗎？如果受邀你還會重返螢幕嗎？
I have no idea! It’s not my issue to deal with, I’ll leave it inthe hands of people who’ve got it. I’m not spending much time thinking aboutit, I’ve had a great journey on these four films, I’m happy.
我也不知道！不是我能決定的問題，我把這個問題留給那些有關的人。我沒有花多少時間去思考這個，拍攝《X戰警》的過程是一段很棒的旅程，我很開心。
If something comes up that looks interesting, I’m always willingto read and take a look but I’m perfectly happy.
