1 | 100%. People are very against hunting and I'm not when done in a way that respects the animal and isn't wasteful, not for sport. I think it comes from most people being incredibly removed from their food sources. We live in a region where if you get one elk a year, that's enough meat for the ENTIRE year for a family. That animal has lived a free, good life, breathing fresh air, drinking clean water, not confined in a cage or abused and if taken properly it was never afraid, it happens quickly. We just can't, as a family, support buying animal protein from the store anymore. The abuse is horrific in the industrial chain. There are local options, local farms that treat animals very well which are much better choices. We grow at least half of our own produce now and hope to increase it after getting a greenhouse this spring. I know that isn't an option for most people in cities but as you said, supporting local farmers is key. My husband is a practicing Buddhist and it's interesting to read about Siddhartha. He pondered and felt sad about how even tilling the earth disturbed the insects, killed them and caused suffering. It can boggle the mind when you really think about the consequences. |
