Challie 2-20-23 Last Day
Knock at the door
A: Coming! Hold your horses!
A: Uh, Chanel did you forget your keys?
C: No, I came to give it back actually & to get the rest of my things.
A: Okay.
C: Chanel enters, past her, their bodies almost touch
C: Chanel points to some luggage. Is this it? You packed it up already?
A: No, um, actually that's my stuff. .. … I'm moving … … to New Zealand.
C: New Zealand?!! You're moving there and you're actually going to live there?!!
A: Yeah, I am. Henry's already with Will & Sonny at their place & I'm just getting some of my stuff together.
C: When is your flight?
A: Tonight.
C: Tonight?!!!
A: Yeah, it's when Will & Sonny were traveling & I wanted to go with them, you know. They can help me with Henry. … … You're not saying anything.
C: I just -- Why are you doing this, Horton?
A: I think you can figure it out. You weren't going to forgive me & get back together.
C: So you move to a different hemisphere?!! Why are you doing this, Horton?
A: The way I see it there's nothing here for me anymore. Like you said, we're over, and I don't imagine you'd want to be shoulder to shoulder at the bakery working every day together … after what I did. Cheating on you with Alex - the worst mistake of my life! And being here in Salem is just going to remind me of it constantly, just what a fool I am.
C: You are not a fool, Allie.
A: No? Yes. I am. To ruin the best relationship I have ever had. I have made a mess of things here in Salem, so I think it's best if I try to make a go of it some place else.
C: Of course it would be hard to see you every day at the bakery so it is probably best that we don't work together anymore. But, Horton, not working in the same shop and living 8000 miles apart are two very different things.
A: After what I did I just assumed
C: What? That I would never want to see you again?!
A: I don't know. I just thought we were done, like I said.
C: Done as a couple. Yeah. We won't be living together or working together anymore. But, Horton, you can't honestly think I would just write you off forever!! You mean too much to me. And, yes, I am upset, obviously. You hurt me & I know that I made the right decision about our relationship. But, Horton, I still love you. I always will. But, hey, if this is what you think is best for you, I don't want to stand in your way either. And, if this is what is best for you & Henry, then you should definitely go. (sobs) I'm gonna miss you. I'm gonna miss the hell out of you. You're my best friend.
A: (sobs) I'm gonna miss you too, DuPree.
Some time passes.
Chanel comes out pulling luggage behind her.
A: You got everything?
C: I think so.
A: Oh! Wait, look what I found while I was packing. Remember these? (She holds out photos on a strip out of a photo booth.)
C: OMG! Yeah, we took these at the photo booth at the Little Scarlet Door!!
A: Yeah, we used to hang out there all the time. We would stay out all night, dancing, watch the sun come up …
C: And then we'd go get breakfast at that hole in the wall, what did they call it?
A: Uh, the Red Lion.
C: YES.
A: Yeah.
C: And for breakfast we would always order bangers & mash.
A: And then for dessert, sticky toffee pudding!
(Both really laugh.)
C: Those were some of the best days & nights of my life.
A: Me, too. For sure. Here, you should have this. (Holds out the 4 picture strip.)
C: No, they're yours.
(Allie tears the strip in half & gives half to Chanel & keeps half, each having 2 photos.)
A: No, they're ours. Our pictures. Our memories.
C: (with real intent) Thank you, Horton.
A; Of course. (Big smile.) And who knows maybe someday … in time … we'll be like that again.
C: Thank you. Means a lot.
A: Of course.
C: You better send me postcards & let me know if you meet any koalas or kangaroos!
A: That's Australia. But, New Zealand has kiwis & Hobbits.
C: Okay, well you let me know if you have any of them.
A: You will be the first to know.
C: So, uh, I guess … this is it.
A: Can I?
C: Of course you can.
(They embrace. Not like best friends. They rock back & forth. This is full contact, full body hugging. Someone is sighing. Someone is sniffling. Allie begins to cry outright.)
C: Goodbye, Horton.
A: Goodbye, DuPree.
(Chanel leaves.)
(Allie bursts into tears, big, ugly crying.)
She is looking at the two photos & she flashes back to watching TV together & laughing & being on top of each other, they were sitting so close in the same chair or something. Then she is seeing them begin to make out. Then she flashes to them upright, at the bakery, and she is saying,
A: Please tell me we didn't lose money! Please tell me we at least broke even.
C: We made a profit, aa big one! Look! We made that on our first day. When the world gets one of us down, we help the other one out. Maybe this is our chance to see …
A: Oh, it definitely sounds crazy & I love it.
(Allie, also pulling luggage behind her, leaves the apartment for the last time.)
