IN X-Men: Dark Phoenix, thehighly anticipated culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies which opens on June 5 inPhilippine cinemas from 20th Century Fox, the X-Men face one of their gravestand most personal challenges to date.

“It’s the character I feel loyal to, getting to take Charles forward anddo something else with him as well, it just feels right. So that’s what broughtme back,” says McAvoy about returning to X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

James McAvoy returns onceagain to play the role of Charles Xavier, the leader of the X-Men. A paternalfigure whose ego is inflating as his team's reputation has grown, he'll havethe hardest time adapting to Jean's changing powers, especially given hishistory repressing them . McAvoy here talks what brought him back, working withSimon Kinberg as a director, and whether he is jealous of his colleague'ssuperhero suits.

The legacy cast are coming back. What prompted you toreturn?

I think a combination ofthings. We all enjoy playing these characters—I know I do. I've always enjoyedbeing in these X-Men films. I love this company of actors. Andthe crew, I've got to say, from people like Hutch Parker, our producer; SimonKinberg, our writer and now director; Josh McLaglen, our first AD/producer.There's a massive extended family that goes back nearly 10 years that you feelvery loyal to. And it's also the character that I feel loyal to , getting totake Charles forward and do something else with him as well, it just feelsright. So that's what brought me back.

Where do we find Charles?

Whereas formerly he wasmaybe a figurehead or a leader of a social movement, he's now a figurehead anda leader of a political movement, and I think that's how he regards himself, aswell. One of the interesting things he does is, he justifies what he's doingbecause he can say that he's being loyal to his principles, but I think he'sforgotten that those principles only exist to protect the people he should beloyal to. That's his family, and that's his kind, his species, and he's sort offorgotten that.

I think he's put himselfat the front of it all, seen himself as the torchbearer, being the friendlyface of mutanity for humanity. He's justified what his ego is making him do,becoming the center of attention. And if you go back to First Class, that's something I tried to put into him, as a bit more of a self-centered person.The thing that was always more interesting about Charles is he's selfless, hisvanity is very low, he's very wise, his empathy rules him, and his selflessnessand almost priestly nature is what defines him, his need to help others. So,in First Class, while not making him evil or bad, we tried tomake him a bit more self-centered or self-obsessed. And that kind ofdisappeared in the intervening two movies. It's sort of come back here, which Ireally like; I really enjoyed exploring that fallibility.

Simon is director this time. How was it working with him?

By the time Simon tookover and directed Dark Phoenix, he'd already been working with usas a writer/director/producer in some capacity. He'd always been verycollaborative about the screenplay, if we had ideas to tweak things, lines oreven just whole character arcs, he would sometimes, at one end of the spectrum,completely redesign a character arc and, at the smaller end, let us flip linesin and out. Then, also on the days if he had an idea for a moment here orthere, we were very comfortable with Simon giving us a bit of direction toaugment what was already going on. It did feel extremely natural when he slidin to the director's chair for this movie. What was interesting was that hisnatural instinct was to pare down, rely on the acting. Still going forspectacle, but to pare down some of the more primary colors and make them morenuanced shades of colors—that was his way to do it. To strip it all back, keepit real, go for the drama, as well as the crash, bang, wallop, but definitel ygo for the emotional drama.

Jessica Chastain is thenew arrival this time. You have worked with her before. How much did you get tointeract?

I think we had only onescene together…unfortunately! Actually, I had a couple scenes with hercharacter, but she wasn’t always there, sometimes it was a special effect.

One of the reasons shesaid she took the job was she was looking forward to hanging out and actingwith me again, and then we barely crossed paths! I remember us being a littlebit pissed off at the whole thing. But she's an amazing actor and as much asshe's got this very serious actor's reputation—she is, she does itbrilliantly—she's a lot of fun on set. She can do it and still have fun, whichI really, really appreciate. Also, we're a big family, we've been going a longtime and we all get on really well; somebody coming into that might not justslide in there, but she became part of the crew.

她說她接這部戲的原因之一是她很期待能和我一起出去玩，再和我一起演戲，但是後來我們幾乎沒什麼交集！我記得我們都對這整件事有點不滿意。但她是一位很棒的演員，就和她有的非常嚴肅的演員聲譽一樣，她很嚴肅，她的表演很出色，片場中的她也很有趣。她在工作的時候也能玩的開心，這點讓我特別的欣賞。而且，我們劇組是一個大家庭，我們在一起的時間很長了，大家相處也很融洽。有人加入我們這個家庭的話，可能不會融入我們，但是她成為了我們這個家庭之中的一員。

Yeah, I was the subjectof some of that! There's a bit where my body is being controlled by Jean Grey,so to achieve that, they put me on wires, and they would pull my body around.Those two had a lot of fun with that and an iTunes version of the Macarena!

On Apocalypse andthis one, we were better behaved. I think we tried to make the movie in ashorter time period than ever before. And we all realized that this was Simon'sfirst film as the actual director, and so we all wanted to show up for him andwork as hard as we could. I think that gave us a renewed focus. And just tohave someone new in the chair might do that anyway, but he's part of thefamily, so we all wanted to bring it for him.

Could this be the last time?

Every single one we'vedone has felt like it's the last one we do. As an actor, I've pretty much onlyin the last five or six years started to think, “Maybe it isn't the last timeI'll ever get to act again.”

每次拍完新電影，我們都覺得這是我們拍的最後一部。作為演員，我也只在過去五六年內才開始去想：“也許這不是我最後一次出演。”



So, in terms of X-Men,I've always gone, “If this is the last one, it's been great.” We've got newowners for the franchise, and who knows what they're going to do. But if thisis the last one, it feels, narratively speaking, like a good end.

所以，對於《X戰警》系列，我總是想：“如果這是最後一部話，那它已經很好了。”公司換了新的老闆，誰又知道他們想做什麼呢。但如果這是最後一部的話，從敘事的角度來看，故事有一個好的結局。



It feels, at least thefour films we've done over the last decade, like it ends up well and you'd be happyto walk away at this point. And I'm certainly happier to walk away at thispoint than I would have been at any other point.

You don’t really get to suit up like the others. Are youjealous？

I am, a bit. I'd like towear a daft superhero suit. And, this time around, they were quite sparse andpractical I thought. But I generally like to get suited and booted in thestuff. Even when it's uncomfortable, it's worth it . I'm slightly jealous. I doget my in-the-field look with a turtleneck, which I rather liked.

There’s a reference in the trailer to the speechesCharles makes and how Michael Fassbender’s Erik is sick of it. Is that pokingat the tropes?

I don’t think it’s pokingfun at it, but it might be by nature because Simon is trying to make somethingthat is a little bit the antithesis to some of the tropes that you always getand make it more grounded.

I don't know, I think it was more character stuff between Charles and Erik, because they have had this argumentso many times. Which is essentially, “There's good in this person, I've got amessiah complex, please let me try and save the person at great risk to thegreater public.” And Erik being much more pragmatic and clinical, saying,“Let's just cut the problem out.” And so, Erik is just saying, “Let's just notdo this again. We've done it for years, so cut to the chase and get the fighton!”
