地點: @social_innovation_lab (台北市大安區仁愛路三段99號2樓208室)

【Global Taipei Dialogue XVIII: LGBTQI+ Inclusion and Taiwan’s International Space】
Date: 18:30-21:00, May 25, 2023 (Thu)
Venue: Social Innovation Lab (Room 208, 2F, No. 99, Section 3, Renai Road, Daan District, Taipei)

Four years ago, Taiwan made history as the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. This important legal development was a product of over three decades of activism by community leaders who fought for gender equity and inclusiveness for the LGBTQI+ community. The decision to legalize same-sex marriage also bolstered Taiwan’s reputation as a regional bastion of democracy and human rights. Recently, Taiwan has continued down the path towards equal rights by recognizing transnational same-sex marriages and expanding adoption rights for same-sex couples.

At the same time, the LGBTQI+ community continues to struggle for full equality. For example, there are lingering challenges in acceptance of LGBTQI+ individuals in the workplace and in rural communities. Additionally, there are challenges to legal rights of non-binary and transgender individuals. On the transnational front, the pressure of conservative religious groups, many of which receive financial and content backing from overseas, hinders the efforts towards non-discrimination. Our Global Taipei Dialogue XVIII aims to critically evaluate the state of LGBTQI+ rights in Taiwan four years after the legalization of same-sex marriage, and understand how it impacts Taiwan position in the global system amid the nation’s quest to expand its international space.
